(Review) Lupe Fiasco-Lasers by Ms. Jamz
Lasers or Losers?
Lupe Fiasco’s third album has been anticipated since his second was released. Fans couldn’t get enough. It seemed like forever that we had to wait. I can remember a classmate in college using Little Weapon in a class presentation. The Cool dropped in 2007 and we been waiting eagerly for Lupe to drop another album. But with such a long wait, was the album worth it? Did we amp it up so high it couldn’t possible meet our expectations?
There’s been some talk that the album is just modest… as my boy Chris said “mild sauce”. But there’s also some talk that the album is hot and well worth the wait? What do I think?
I think I need more time. I’m the type of person where a song or album may not appeal to me after the first listen. Sometimes I have to listen to an album more than once to really feel it. As of right now, I’m digging the album it’s got everything Lupe is supposed to have; Political commentary, rage against the machine if you will, hot beats and fast rhymes that don’t hit you until you rewind it back. Of course the songs he released already are hot; Words I Never Said and Show Goes On, but there’s some sneaky tracks that grew on me instantly, Never Forget You with John Legend, Out of My Head ft Trey Songs (I will bet any amount of money that this song is the next radio release), and Coming Up.
The only thing that disappoints me is the quantity of tracks. After 3 years we get 12 songs!? That’s it?! That’s like being starving at a high class restaurant, ordering the steak and it’s a bite-sized portion. While it may be the best steak you’ve had, it’s not nearly enough to satisfy you or make the wait worthwhile. And it kinda makes you want to hit up a McDonalds to fill the rest of the space. So I guess if we combine the Enemy of the State: A Love Story Mixtape with Lasers we get the quantity and quality we were expecting. But that’s not going to stop me from bumping his CD in my car and everywhere I go.
So my overall rating as of now, B- with potential to be an A…
